Bakelite is a resin material that was produced in the early 1900s and was the first plastic substance made of synthetic components. Initially used for its electrically non-conductive and heat resistant properties in radio and telephone casings, the material was also used in other products such as kids' toys, kitchenware, and jewelry. Typically made of bright, beautiful colors, Bakelite has become very collectible over recent years and is appreciated amongst many.
A fabulous set of two Bakelite bracelets from the Retro (ca1940s) era! The matching bracelets are overdyed, meaning that they have been resin washed to add highlight and dimension. The bracelets have been washed in a lovely blue resin, creating an alluring green color. A gorgeous pale orange color peeks through the resin wash and is clearly visible in the carved edges. Vibrant red, blue, and green decorate the carved circles, adorned by bright orange rays. Both bracelets have a central channel, enhancing the depth of color. The bold and wide bangle has a "clamper" style design with a hinge and opening on each side, making it easy to slip on and off securely. The link bracelet has a fabulous chunky style, securing with a discrete latch hook. The backs of both bracelets display a smooth blue surface with a polished finish, perfectly completing the bold look. This set of bracelets would make a fantastic addition to any Bakelite collection!
Measurements: The opening of the clamper bracelet, where your wrist would rest, measures approximately 2 1/5" wide and, with the hinges at rest, 1 1/4" tall. The hinges spread to accommodate a wrist height of 2 1/4". The link bracelet is approximately 7 3/4" long. The surface of each bracelet measures 1 1/16" at the widest point and is approximately 3/8" at the thickest point.
Condition: The bracelets are in overall excellent condition. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the Bakelite except for a few minor surface scratches; none of which are noticeable when worn. The hinge displays some wear, however, it is in excellent working condition, functioning with a tight spring and clamping fully shut. The link bracelet latches securely.
